The last volcanic eruption on the island occurred between 1888 and 1890 and involved the “La Fossa” crater. The inhabitants, at the time mostly farmers and miners working in the sulfur mines, decided to leave the island and it was quickly abandoned. Almost a century later, people started to move to the island and built a village on top of the solidified ash and the remains of the eruption.
During our expert-led private tour, you will reach the top of the volcano that will reward you with a stunning view over the other six sister islands. During the climb, you will notice how vegetation changes, from the Tyrrhenian broom (Genista tyrrhena), to indigenous plants, while in the summit area of the volcano there is no vegetation at all.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: The excursion does not present any particular difficulties. It is graded easy to medium – on the condition that participants do not present any respiratory condition or other significant health problems like high blood pressure. The elevation gain is 390 m.
