Aegadian Islands

Aegadian Islands

The Aegadian archipelago is the natural continuation of the western coast of Sicily. It includes the islands of Favignana, Levanzo, and Marettimo, which boast very different natural environments, with their own historic and architectonic characteristics. Inhabited since the Upper Paleolithic, the Aegadian Islands were conquered by the Phoenicians, and they became the background of a memorable naval battle during the First Punic War, in which Romans defeated Carthaginians and took over Sicily. The clear and turquoise waters of the archipelago have always been an extraordinary resource for the natives. Locals, by taking advantage of the yearly passage of many schools of red tuna and the business interest of well-off Italian families, have been able to blend the Semitic fish tradition with the European industrial innovation, and give birth to one of the biggest tuna fisheries in the Mediterranean Sea
