From Akragas to Agrigento

With this private cultural tour, we will follow the history of the town, from the foundation of the Greek colony of Akragas to Agrigento.

Our day tour develops along the rocky crest of the Temple Hill. A series of sanctuaries consecrated to the most important tutelary gods enriched this crest since the late 6th century BC.

We will then go to Girgenti Hill, which was probably the acropolis of the Greek city, where the medieval town was located. We will visit the Doric temple turned into the Christian Church of Santa Maria dei Greci, the wonderful cathedral dedicated to San Gerlando, with its amazing wooden ceiling and the Diocesan Museum, which contains numerous sacred furnishings. Going along the alleys of the old town, we will reach the Cistercian Monastery of Santo Spirito, which was founded in 1290. We might also admire Giacomo Serpotta’s stuccos, which are masterpieces of the Sicilian Baroque, inside the church. We could then taste the delicious almond and pistachio cookies made by cloistered nuns who follow a centuries-old recipe. Finally, we could have a walk along Via Atenea, which is the main street of the town, and visit the Medieval Church of San Pietro.
