After the earthquake that devastated south-eastern Sicily in 1693, the population of Noto moved from the impervious top of Mount Alveria to the more beautiful slope near the coast. As a result, a maniple comprising illustrious architects conceived a union of luxury and savings (Gesualdo Bufalino), in order to rebuild Noto and make the fine local stone echo the Baroque architecture of Central Europe. The works were overseen by Giuseppe Lanza (Duke of Camastra and Vicar General of Viceroy Uzeda). The result of the reconstruction was a magnificent “stage setting” achieved in accordance with a uniform plan and complying with the models of the late Baroque architecture.
On this private guided tour, we'll walk along the main street of lower Noto, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, to admire the enchanting facades of the main churches, convents, and palaces built by the most important religious orders and aristocratic families. We will then move to the upper part of the city along Via Corrado Nicolaci, that is renowned for the wonderful 18th-century sculpted balconies of the Nicolaci di Villadorata Palace. Stepping along the alleys, we will be back to the main street, where we'll find all the most important monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage since 2002.
