Greek quarries of Plemmirio and Temple of Olympian Zeus

Along the coastline of the peninsula of PlemmirioSyracusans quarried huge blocks of calcarenite stone, which were used for raising their oldest temples. In this way, they changed the coastal landscape of the area forever. The high white cliffs above the sea have the endless tracks of the quarrymen’s hard work. From these latomies (ancient quarries), they quarried the stone for the Temple of Olympian Zeus which, built outside the walls at the beginning of the 6th century BC, was the starring role of Syracusan history during the long and numerous sieges of the Greek city.
