From the Sicani Mountains to the African Sea: Discovering Caltabellotta and Sciacca

This excursion will take you to the discovery of two hidden gems of Sicily: Caltabellotta, a medieval village on the Sicani Mountains rich in history, and Sciacca, a lively coastal town renowned for its craft and maritime traditions.

Perched at 1,000 meters above sea level, Caltabellotta has played a strategic role over the centuries. The village still retains its medieval charm, with narrow, winding streets that climb the mountain and stone buildings steeped in history. Inhabited since prehistoric times, Caltabellotta was the site of important historical events, including the famous Peace of Caltabellotta which ended the War of the Sicilian Vespers. The town's name, of Arabic origin (Qal'at Al-Ballut, the Castle of Oaks), reflects the diverse cultures that have shaped its identity. During this private tour, you will explore the medieval heart of the village, called Terravecchia, visit the Norman-style Cathedral, and explore the Civic Museum, housed in a noble palace. From the panoramic points of Calvario and the Hermitage of San Pellegrino, you will then enjoy a breathtaking view that includes part of western Sicily, giving you glimpses of rare beauty.

After discovering the wonders of Caltabellotta, you will move towards the coast for a guided tour of Sciacca. This charming town boasts a rich medieval and Baroque heritage, with stunning churches, noble palaces, and lively artisan workshops. Here, you'll witness skilled craftsmen at work, preserving age-old traditions such as ceramic and coral craftsmanship, symbols of Sciacca’s cultural and artistic excellence. Our visit will end in Piazza Belvedere, a scenic terrace overlooking the sea, where you can admire the City Palace and the bustling fishing port, watching boats set sail for their daily catch.
