The best of Palermo

Our day walking tour in Palermo will start from "Palazzo dei Normanni", where you will follow the different stages of its historical urban development. Along the axis which crosses ancient “Cassaro”, we will discover some of the footprints of the Phoenician settlement, the Cathedral, the hybrid styles of San Cataldo and Martorana churches, and the artistic masterpieces of the Spanish rule.

We will continue this private guided tour among the narrow streets of some ancient Arabic city markets such as Capo” and “Ballarò”. We will then visit the “lower” part of the city, which is close to the ancient natural harbour “La Cala”, where you will find the famous, ancient market named “Vucciria”, whose name has French origins. This market is still characterized by some sporadic remains of the great “Foreign Nations”, which shaped the identity of the place. The devotional masterpieces of San Giorgio dei Genovesi, San Mamiliano, the Oratories of Santa Cita and Santissimo Rosario in San Domenico are some of the many jewels of this neighborhood.

The last stage of our expert-led tour will be the visit of the famous Opera House “Teatro Massimo”, that proofs both the 19th-century urban renovation and the new season of hopes called Spring of Palermo” due to its re-opening in 1997.
