Thanks to this guided walking tour, you will discover the history of the powerful groups of the Palermitan confraternities, which developed mainly between the 17th and 18th centuries, and their places: the oratories. Although characterized by strong rivalry, each oratory, which was a religious meeting place, had to be the most beautiful amongst the others in order to express the power and the wealth of the group it belonged to. During the 18th century, the master of the artistic narratives of the late Baroque art of the oratories was the Sicilian stucco sculptor Giacomo Serpotta.
By following the path of his stucco masterpieces, we will discover the Oratory of San Lorenzo, the Church of San Francesco d’Assisi, and the oratories of the Loggia neighbourhood: SS. Rosario in San Domenico and Santa Cita. All of these monuments, which are the “white” masterpieces of the aforementioned original sculptor from Palermo, represent the specific imaginary of an entire era.
