Segesta was one of the three cities founded by the Elymians, whose origins, according to the mythical tradition, date back to the Trojans. Mostly integrated with the Greek culture in its architecture, the city developed during Classical times, after which it first became the site of a Muslim community and then of a Norman overlord.
