The Zingaro Nature Reserve is a little corner of paradise nestled along rocky northwestern coast of Sicily. Among jagged cliffs towering over turquoise waters and lush vegetation covering its surfaces, this breathtaking landscape is perfect for a hike from Trapani or the bustling Palermo. Thanks to the dedication of a group of locals in the 1970s, this promontory became Sicily's first protected natural area, preserving its delicate biodiversity from the reckless urban development of that time.
Now, it remains one of the last truly untouched coastal landscapes on the island, where you can hike along narrow, dusty trails that wind through fragrant Mediterranean maquis, revealing dramatic cliffs and sweeping sea views at every turn.
As we traverse this enchanting stretch of coastline, you’ll have the opportunity to pause at some of Lo Zingaro’s stunning secluded beaches - each a hidden gem with crystal-clear waters, perfect for a refreshing swim. As in other nature reserves in Sicily, you will find yourself in deep connection with a wild and unspoiled environment, untouched by the damages of modern development elsewhere.
Our adventure will conclude in the charming coastal village of Scopello, home to the historic Tonnara, an ancient tuna fishery steeped in history. Here, you’ll delve into the traditions of the "tonnaroti" and the legendary “mattanza” ritual, gaining insight into Sicily’s deep-rooted maritime heritage. You will soak in the enchanting atmosphere, admire the iconic sea stacks, and perhaps indulge in some local delicacies - a perfect way to end an unforgettable journey through one of Sicily’s most treasured landscapes.
