Militello in Val di Catania is a delightful late Baroque town situated in the south-eastern part of the island. It makes for an important and interesting stop in a tour of Sicily both for its position, surrounded by creeks and Mediterranean vegetation, and its rich historical and artistic heritage.
Thanks to the 2 important noble families that alternated the power from the 14th to the 19th century, the Barresis and the Brancifortis, Militello turned into a town rich in art, architecture and traditions. The town arose around a castle during the late Middle Ages, but it was partly razed to the ground by the catastrophic earthquake in 1693, to be later rebuilt according to the late Baroque architecture, fashion at the time.
Militello was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, and it has been recently added to the list of the most beautiful villages of Italy.
The gorgeous grotesque masks that support the balconies of the 18th-century palaces, the particular local white stone, which we can appreciate in the two main churches, San Nicolò and Santa Maria della Stella, will accompany you during this private walking tour.
