Travelling along the highway that links the East and West coasts of Sicily, right in the middle of the island, you can see a mountain blanketed with houses and churches. It's Mount Teja, whose slopes host the town of Agira. This small hilltop town still bears witness to the peaceful coexistence between Christians, Jews and Muslims in the Middle Ages.
Our private walking tour will start from the Arab quarter, where we will visit the church of Santissimo Salvatore, whose interior features the oldest Torah Ark (Aron Kodesh) in Europe dating back to 1454. Our guided stroll will continue through the narrow alleys of the old town center, where we will also see the former site of the synagogue. We'll then climb to the castle of Agira, erected at the summit to exploit the dominant position of the mountain and to control the surrounding valleys. Even today, after centuries, this place overlooks a "sea of land", a unique panoramic view in the heart of Sicily.
After an uphill cultural walk, we will begin the descent into the fragrant, culinary heart of Agira, known for the so-called "Cassatelle", a local traditional sweet whose golden pastry contains a delicious filling of cocoa and spices.
