Schiena dell’Asino Trail: A Family-Friendly Hike on Mount Etna

Experience a private trekking tour on Mount Etna with the “Schiena dell’Asino” Trail, a scenic path perfect for the whole family. This breathtaking trail climbs the south-eastern slope of the volcano, offering enchanting views, explosions of colors and captivating scents.

As you hike through lush pine forests, expansive lava fields, and eruptive craters, you'll witness the raw power of volcanic activity - both its destructive force and its ability to create new landscapes. The disarming beauty of the Valle del Bove, finally, will allow you to retrace the geological history of a lost volcano, from whose ashes "u Mungibeddu" (or Mongibello, the name by which the locals call Etna) was reborn, like the Arab Phoenix.

The route, which winds for about 7-8 km, starts near the famous Rifugio Sapienza. The trail’s name, Schiena dell’Asino ("Donkey’s Back"), reflects its particular elevation profile, which is rather steep at the beginning, gentle in the central part and uphill again at the end.

Along the way you will enjoy a privileged view of the southern slope of Mount Etna, a dramatic landscape shaped by countless lateral eruptions. The trail also offers a spectacular vantage point over the Gulf of Catania, stretching out to the horizon. Once at the top, on the edge of the magnificent Valle del Bove, our expert guide will unveil the geological evolution of our volcano. A history of over half a million years that began on the bottom of an ancient sea and that still continues to fascinate curious travelers who want to discover it.
