The north-eastern slope of Mount Etna retains a wild charm that inspires ancestral feelings. The unspoiled nature, among forests of Etna birch, caves sculpted by the force of rushing lava flows and breathtaking landscapes, sets the stage for a journey through the last episodes of a geological evolution spanning half a million years.
The trail (approximately 400 meters of altitude difference) starts from “Rifugio Citelli”, the last destination reachable by car. Along the "Serracozzo" path, immersed in a forest of birch and pine trees, you will reach the cave of the same name, an indelible testimony of one of the most spectacular historical eruptions of our volcano: the 1971 eruption.
Once you reach the ridge at around 2,000 meters, you will be seduced by the enchanting spectacle of the “Valle del Bove”, a semi-circular depression resulting from the interaction of volcano, tectonic, and erosive processes.
On the way back, among the ridges and valleys that follow one another, we will witness the impact of other historical eruptions (1928 and 1865). Here, among lateral craters, eruptive fractures and lava expanses, we will experience firsthand the destructive power, as well as the grandeur, of Mount Etna.
Activity level: The excursion does not present any particular difficulties. It is graded Easy to Medium – on the condition that participants do not present any respiratory condition or other significant health problems like high blood pressure. Recommended for children over the age of ten and only under close adult supervision.
