The Basilian architectural complex of the province of Messina plays a major role within the vibrant culture of the area. It is an excellent historical-artistic phenomenon which is linked to a Greek religious order. The Basilian monks, who had escaped the island after the Arabian advance, returned to Sicily together with the Normans and settled in the Peloritani area. Here they created a unique architecture strictly linked to Byzantine shapes and characterised by a fine use of colours that dominate building curtains.
On this cultural guided tour, we will admire some important signs of that artistic season in the small villages hidden along the Ionian side of the Peloritani. We will start our private tour in Mili San Pietro, where you will find the nice Church of Santa Maria. We will then head to Itala to visit the Church of San Pietro. We will conclude our excursion in Forza d’Agrò, where you will see the wonderful Church of Santi Pietro and Paolo.
