This private guided tour is an eno-archaeological journey to discover the town of Tindari and its wine of ancient origins "Mamertino" which, as mentioned by Pliny the Elder, takes its name from the Mamertini, mercenary soldiers who forcibly took possession of these lands.
The promontory of Tindari, the seat of a Greek city since the beginning of the 4th century BC, represented an important place for controlling the northern coastal road of Sicily. The Mamertini, originally from Campania, had initially worked for the Greeks of Syracuse. However, in the 3rd century BC, they allied with the Carthaginians and deceitfully occupied Messina and Milazzo, becoming a serious threat to Tindari and all the small centers of the northeastern tip of the island.
These skilled warriors are the protagonists of the history of the Nocera grape variety, which they cultivated between Tindari and Milazzo, and of the Mamertino wine, that is still produced in this area and in 2004 received DOC recognition.
Better known as a fruity red wine with good structure and minerality, Mamertino is a blend of Nero d'Avola, Nocera, and other local red grape varieties. After exploring the archaeological site of Tindari with our expert guide, you will appreciate the qualities of Mamertino wine through a tasting in one of the wineries of the area, accompanied by delicious local products.
