The Jato Valley, which is a few kilometers away from Palermo, is placed among verdant hills and river valleys that stretch as far as the eye can see. It encloses small towns that have always been dedicated to agriculture. The most striking feature of this enchanting part of the territory of Palermo is its breathtaking panorama splattered with hills, mountains and plains. Its horizon shows the silhouettes of the towns of Corleone, Camporeale, Piana degli Albanesi, and Contessa Entellina, just to name a few.
Our private food&wine tour features the products of some excellent small family-run farms. The farmers’ love for their land, their rediscovery of ancient traditions, and their craftsmanship mean that these products offer an excellent quality, together with being unique.
We will start with a visit to a small and well-kept dairy farm that was built next to the owner’s house, pastures and stables. We will have the opportunity to see the preparation of local cheeses and to taste the unique Caciocavallo cheese and Ricotta cheese they produce.
The second step of our day guided tour will appeal to all your senses. It will lead us to a land cultivated with local grape varieties, such as the Catarratto and Perricone. These grapes were highly valued in the ancient past, but lost importance later and were not largely grown for a long time. Luckily, they have been rediscovered recently and they are now cultivated again. Therefore, we will conclude our tour by tasting these particular wines paired with local foods.
The last step of the tour will bring us to an olive oil farm, where we will listen to the fascinating story of the owner and her family, walk among the olive trees, and better understand the local olive oil production. Afterwards, we will have the opportunity to try the local olive oil on a fragrant slice of homemade bread.
